How to extend the search?

Is it posible to extend the search to the fields of a plugin? Where should I start looking?

For example in car's category, I should want my users to select between automatic/manual transmission in their searches.

Now there's no option to extend the search with the fields of a plugin. I open a ticket in JIRA. You can see the progess here: http://issues.osclass.org/browse/OSCLASS-51
