EMERGENCY: Site Down
« on: November 03, 2013, 07:23:52 pm »
Hi guys,

My classified ad site is down. Can't figure out what went wrong. It started with not recognising my login details. Now even the home page doesn't load. It gives this error message: "The site has resulted in too many redirects"

Any tips will be highly appreciated.

Thanks.

Did you modify the .htaccess file or the configuration of your site?
Check the access logs of your webserver to know what is happening

Thanks for your response, Daniel.

I've checked the access logs and it says "This directory is empty".

When I checked the .htaccess file, I got this:

<IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /
RewriteRule ^index\.php$ - [L]
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule . /index.php [L]
</IfModule>

I can't figure out whether the codes are correct or not. Kindly confirm if there is anything wrong with the codes.

Thanks.

did you move the folder of the installation?
where is osclass installed?
what did you modify lately?
Which is the directory that's empty?
do you have negotiation mod disabled?

Guys,

I haven't touched the .htaccess file at all, and I haven't moved the installation folder.

@frosticek, if I empty the .htaccess file wouldn't there be more issues?

Well, Osclass or any other software *usually* don't break without a reason, so if it was working before, and now it's not working, something has changed.

.htaccess seems fine to me, did you modify the configuration of permalinks?

You could delete the .htaccess and access your admin panel, if fact, you could access your admin panel even if the .htaccess is still there, it should cause any problem, but to make sure, you could delete it,or just rename it to backup.htaccess ... access your admin panel and check your permalinks configuration, or disable them. If the problem continues, then it's something with your server configuration. Later, reenable permalinks and check if the problem continues

Can you access via ftp and verify that all the files are there intact? Especially already mentioned config.php and verify that the settings are correct.

Also, how do you host your installation? Did you contact tech support to check if the server didn't have any issues that might affect your files/database?

create phpinfo.php
```
<?php
phpinfo();
?>
```
Put it at your root

then try to run http://yourdomain.tld/phpinfo.php

Let see what happened.

My website http://www.careylist.com will not work, if I set my friendly URL option. It gives me all kinds of errors like folders not found or path is not found, etc. Maybe he set some options like friendly url which completely shutdown it down. Hopefully, he back it up before his last revision.

If not, it is possible his site has been hacked.

Does your server has mod_rewrite enabled?
mod_negotiation is known to cause issues with mod_rewrite if the url has a similar name of a real file, I think we solved most if not all of these possible problems.
There's no reason (if your server support rewrite) that it will not work

Hi, guys.

I got really frustrated with this problem. I tried many things, but it didn't work. So, I took the final option - I just re-installed the whole site (script) losing all information in the process. Luckily, the site was new and had only a few subscribers.

Thanks for all your suggestions. Hopefully, this problem will not recur. If it does, then I guess I'm gonna have to revisit your suggestions.

Thanks again.

@drmahey

You could try to do it first replacing only files, not database
